Latest update on Coronavirus (COVID-19)

UnitedHealthcare is waiving member cost-sharing for the treatment of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) through May 31, 2020 for Medicare Advantage and Medicaid members. We will also work with self-funded customers who want us to implement a similar approach on their behalf. This builds on the company’s previously announced efforts to waive cost-sharing for COVID-19 testing and testing-related visits, and the expansion of other member services.

Starting March 31, 2020 until June 18, 2020, UnitedHealthcare will now also waive cost-sharing for in-network, non-COVID-19 telehealth visits for its fully-insured Commercial, Medicare Advantage, and Medicaid members. Again, we will work with self-funded customers who want us to implement a similar approach. The company previously announced we would waive cost-sharing for telehealth visits related to COVID-19 testing, in addition to waiving cost-sharing for 24/7 Virtual Visits with preferred telehealth partners.

Symptoms of Coronavirus (COVID-19) are like an upper respiratory infection, which may include fever, cough, and shortness of breath.

UnitedHealthcare Will Cover Coronavirus (COVID-19) Testing, Visits Related to Testing and Treatment

This test, visits related to testing and treatment of Coronavirus (COVID-19) are covered by UnitedHealthcare for insured Medicaid and Medicare members as long as all are in-network.

Appointments without coming in: Telehealth or virtual visits


Talk to your local health care providers from home or without going into their office or clinic. Many providers can "see you" through apps and technologies. This way you don't have to go out. This is known as telehealth or a virtual visit. You can make appointments with your health care provider for Coronavirus (COVID-19) and other needs.

  • COVID-19 visits. This may be a good option to decide if you should be tested. United Healthcare will cover appointments related to COVID-19. For Medicare Advantage and Medicaid members, they are covered through June 18, 2020.
  • Non-COVID-19 visits. You may be able to use telehealth for urgent care or routine care. You also may be able to have a virtual visit for physical, occupational or speech therapies. Your current benefits will apply. This is available until June 18, 2020.
  • If you have an upcoming mental health or counseling appointment and it is through UnitedHealthcare or Optum behavioral benefit, you can continue your mental health or counseling visits from home. Your health plan benefits apply. You can use this through April 30, 2020.
  • If you need a medical appointment, call your primary care doctor or health care provider and ask about having a telehealth or virtual visit.

24/7 and local virtual visits with telehealth providers. Having virtual appointments with local providers, as well as providers not living in your area, can help decide if you should be tested. You will have to go in person to be tested though. Besides deciding whether you should be tested, virtual visits can be used for urgent care treatment of other illnesses, like the seasonal flu, allergies, pink eye, and more. You also may be able to use a virtual visit for physical, occupational or speech therapy. 

UnitedHealthcare will cover virtual visits related to Coronavirus (COVID-19) for some Medicare Advantage and Medicaid members through June 18, 2020. For other health related telehealth visits, your current health benefits plan applies through June 18, 2020.

We do not want you to worry. Talk to your provider. Your provider does not have to do special paper work (called a prior authorization) with UnitedHealthcare through May 31, 2020. As long as you are a member and moving to a different post-acute care setting this is an option. (Examples of post-acute care settings are skilled nursing facility, long-term acute facilities, in-patient rehab or home health care.) The provider who admitted you will simply let us know within 48-hours of your move.
